Valkyrs Win Mixed Cup

Valkyrs Hockey Club, sponsored by "The Whitehouse", claimed another trophy in a successful season after winning the Manx Hockey Association Mixed Cup on Saturday. The tournament was held at the NSC in a 7-a-side, round robin format. The teams played three group matches each and the winners of each group progressed into the semi-final stage.

With the sun shining, the westerners had a tame start to the tournament with a 0-0 draw with Celts. The following two group matches were completed in a more convincing fashion with a 5-0 win over Kestrels and a 4-0 win over Ramsey B.

The semi-final saw Valkyrs A face Celts for the second time of the day. With Chris Caldwell and Captain G Miller feeling fresher than they did during the morning match, Valkyrs finished up 4-2 winners. This put them into the final against Vikings A who had won their semi-final match after a tense penalty stroke competition.

The final itself was a very close game with Valkyrs taking an early lead through Chris Caldwell. However, Vikings struck back with a goal to secure a 1-1 draw. The result was again to be decided on penalty strokes with Vikings stepping up first. After four strokes each, the score was 3-2 to Valkyrs. With a goal needed to stay in the competition, Vikings sent up Island Captain & MHA Player of the Year, Conor Byrne, to take the final stroke. However, the pressure and the heat got to the Vikings supremo and he fired his penalty high over the bar to give victory to Valkyrs.

Congratulations go to the winning Valkyrs A team of Greg Miller (Capt), Russ Miller, Will Margot (GK), Steven Lowe, Rob Mylchreest, Chris Caldwell, Andrea Kneen, Kerry Beattie, Poppy Walker, Leanne Miller & Penny Humphries-Jones.  Report by Jonathan Hull
