Men Take Premier Division Title

Sat, 23 Jan 2010

Will Margot's Mens A secured the Premier Division Title today with a crushing 10-1 victory over Castletown at Peel. Anyone who thought that Valkyrs would need assistance from the umpire(s) to score the required number of goals were sorely mistaken with Valkyrs 3-0 up after 10 mins after some fine, flowing hockey and three legitimate strikes on goal.  Castletown never really looked like repeating the draw from earlier in the season and it was left to Ollie Webster and the prolific Chris Caldwell to bag a hat-trick each. At times there was some superb hockey played and with word coming from the NSC that Bacchas were beating Vikings it was almost time to get the champagne opened. Greg Miller managed a brace with Neill Jacobs and Russ Miller also getting onto the scoresheet. As usual, Gareth Morris controlled the midfield assisted by Rob Mylchreest who had a superb game was voted MOTM by the lads. In the end it was a great squad effort and a well deserved title.

Elsewhere the Mens B managed to avoid relegation with a surprise victory over a by far stronger looking Vikings B team. Needing at least a point to condemn Harlequins to the drop the team played some nice hockey with Mikey Lee, Bill Cowie and Neil Shimmin defending for their lives and went into half time 1-1 thanks to a goal from Jonah Hull. Hull then managed a further two in the second half but with ten minutes to go Vikings pulled it back to 3-2. The lads battled hard to the end and hung on to take the victory. It had been a very hard season at times but the squad showed great spirit to keep going each week.

Finally, both the Ladies A & B teams came runners up in their respective leagues, with the Ladies B just missing out on the final day. Well done to all the girls on a great season.
